Y como últimamente ando medio obsesionada con lo animal, lo rústico y lo (casi) chamánico, Beetle and Flor está también, desde ya, en mi lista de necesidades vitales para el año que empieza. ¡Oh, sí!

Only four days left for Christmas and I still have no wish-list, I’ve just decided to start it today after discovering this beautiful pictures of The Woodland, a Vancouver-based jewellery brand that design this amazing chains, like very urban and ultra-subtle shibari-like. And, as I am kind of obsessed lately with all that animal, rustic and (almost) shamanic stuff, Beetle and Flor are also, since this very moment, in my vital needs list for the New Year. Oh, yeah!

“Últimamente he trabajo casi exclusivamente con papel blanco diferentes objetos, recortables, instalaciones y performances. Gran parte de mi trabajo está hecha de folios A4 en blanco. Es, probablemente, el medio más común y más consumido que se utiliza hoy en día para transmitir información, pero rara vez nos damos cuenta de la real materialidad del A4. El A4 es, probablemente, lo más cercano a la nada que puedes tener. Usar este material, carente de valor, me proporciona, como artista, una gran libertad para tratar temas importantes y rellenar el papel con historias más dramáticas.”
Creo que ya había contado antes que la obra de Peter Callesen consigue no dejarme indiferente nunca, no importa cuántas veces la vea, siempre me parece increíble su precisión técnica y su sensibilidad conceptual. Con el nombre de Out of Nothing se acaba de publicar un libro recopilatorio con las obras más representativas del artista danés, nombre que además, lleva también la exposición actual* de sus obras que se puede encontrar en el Trapholt Museum de Kolding en Dinamarca hasta el 1 de Marzo del 2010.

“Lately I have worked almost exclusively with white paper in different objects, paper cuts, installations and performances. A large part of my work is made from A4 sheets of white paper. It is probably the most common and consumed media used for carrying information today, but we rarely notice the actual materiality of the A4 paper. The A4 paper is perhaps as close to nothing as you can get. Using this worthless material gives me as artist a greater freedom to deal with heavy subjects and to fill the paper with more dramatic stories”.
I think I had already mentioned before that Peter Callesen’s work never fails to impress me, no matter how often do I see it, his technical precision and his concept sensitivity always seem incredibly amazing to me. Out of Nothing is the name of a book compiling the most representative of this Danish artist’s works and that is name also of the current exhibition* of his work that can be found, till 1st March 2010 in Trapholt Museum in Kolding, Denmark.

Qué precioso el catálogo de Resort 2010 de Yves Saint Laurent, ¿no? Qué bonitos los colores, qué elegante y qué sutil la referencia a las conchas marinas como inspiración principal de la colección. Me encantan los temas marinos, pero odio las referencias literales, así que agradezco enormemente que este mar de Stefano Pilati no tenga rayas marineras, cuerdas y cabos, anclas, banderas marítimas ni otros manidos topicazos del estilo.
Me gusta el eyeliner grueso con el toque de sombra turquesa: turquesa aguamarina con verde alga, blanco con nude, ámbar con teja. Fantástico. Me gusta la contundencia de la joyería, evidente y protagonista, el toque retro de los turbantes, los cinturones finos marcando cintura y, sobretodo, la actitud de las imágenes. Desafortunadamente, me han dicho que esto último no está a la venta. Aún.

How amazing Yves Saint Laurent’s Resort 2010 catalogue is, isn’t it? How beautiful the colours are, how elegant and subtle the reference to seashells as the main inspiration of the collection. I love the sea-related topics but I hate literal references so I really appreciate this Stefano Pilati’s sea has no sailor stripes, ropes or cables, anchors, sea flags nor any other hackneyed clichés like that.
I really like the thick eyeliner with that touch of turquoise eyeshadow: aquamarine turquoise with seaweed green, white with nude, amber with brick. Amazing. I like the forcefulness of the jewellery, obvious and leading, the retro touch of the turbans, the thin belts showing off the waist and, above all, the attitude in the pictures. Unfortunately I’ve been told this last thing is not for sale. Yet.

Sólo tras haberse peleado días, y quizás incluso noches, con una máquina de tricotosa; sólo tras haber partido mil agujas, tras conseguir que el hilo se enrollara siempre donde no debía (esto es: en cualquier sitio menos en las agujas), tras haberse rendido a la abstracción del punto y al razonamiento especialmente estructurado que requiere para dominarlo, tras admitir que uno nunca va a ir más lejos del punto liso, sin florituras ni magnitudes… Sólo entonces se puede entender la grandeza del trabajo de Sandra Backlund y admitir que lo suyo pertenece a otra dimensión.
Su trabajo va, claramente, más allá del sencillo tricotar y es, simple y llanamente, puro arte: “Tengo ese lado que es muy matemático en el que lo quiero medir todo y soy una auténtica obsesiva del control. Además, tengo otro que es realmente libre, artístico, en el que me quiero olvidar de todo lo que puede parecer importante y sentirme libre como artista. Esto ha sido toda la vida un poco complicado, porque es ciertamente estresante combinar los dos factores”.

Only after having fought many days and, maybe, even many nights against a knitting machine; only after having broken a thousand needles, after having managed to always roll up the thread were it shouldn’t be rolled (that is, everywhere except the needles), after having surrender to knitting abstraction and to the specially structured reasoning requiered to control it, after admitting that you will never go further than single jersey, without frills nor magnitudes… Only then it is possible to understand the greatness of Sandra Backlund’s work and to admit that what she does, clearly belongs to another dimension.
Her work goes without doubt further than simply knitting and it is simply and clearly said, pure art: “There is this one side that is really mathematical where I want to measure everything and I’m like a control freak. Then there’s this other part that is really free, artistic side; I just want to forget about everything that is important and be really free as an artist. It has been difficult my whole life because it has been so stressful to combine the two.”

Las dos últimas semanas por aquí se han reducido a esto: dónde pongo qué, qué pongo ahí y cosas del estilo… Aún estamos en ello de hecho. Design*Sponge es mi nueva biblia en estos momentos; es un blog fantástico muy en plan lifestyle que tiene unas ideas increíbles en temas de decoración. No es que ninguna de las habitaciones de mi nueva casa haya quedado como alguna de estas imágenes, pero ¡hey, sigo intentándolo!

Last two weeks in here have been all about this: where do I put this, what do I put there and stuff like that… We’re still working on it, actually. Design*Sponge is my new bible at the moment; an amazing blog very lifestyle-like with really cool ideas about decoration. Not that any room of my new house is really looking like the ones in the pictures but, hey, I’m still trying!

Prácticamente a diario recibo un email cuyo asunto es “Canción del día”, iniciativa singular donde las haya de un alma caritativa y altruista que cada día dedica unos minutos a compartir con sus contactos de correo una canción diferente.
El viernes pasado me llegó Move de CSS, con un vídeo súper divertido rodado en Barcelona, que como todo lo que caracteriza a este grupo brasileño es puro color y buen rollo y que además me hizo especial gracia porque justo cuando Lovefoxxx apareció de pronto en mi pantalla cantando eso de “…you better get your move on” yo empezaba mi mudanza. Literal quiero decir, nada de cambio de blog ni cosas del estilo, hablo de mudanzas de toda la vida. LA gran mudanza, permitidme que añada.
Así que si no estoy apareciendo por aquí con toda la regularidad que debería prometo volver a hacerlo tan pronto como abandone Ikea, donde llevo prácticamente una semana recluida. Cantando “…you better get your move on” de pasillo en pasillo, eso sí!

Almost daily I get an email named “Song of the Day”, peculiar initiative promoted by a charitable and altruistic soul that each day dedicates a few minutes to share with his email contacts a different song.
Last Friday it was Move by CSS, with a super funny video shooted in Barcelona that, like everything that surrounds this Brazilian band, is full of colour and positive vibes and that especially amazed me because just as Lovefoxxx appeared on my screen singing “…you better get your move on” I was starting my own move. Literally, I mean, no change of blog or stuff like that, I am talking about a real move. THE big move, let me add.
So if I’m not showing up in here as regularly as I should I promise to do it as soon as I get to leave Ikea, where I’ve been almost living for the last week. Singing “…you better get your move on” from aisle to aisle, though!
